draga má af rannsókninni. Úrtak var lítið en á móti
kemur að svarhlutfall var hátt og úrtakið nánast
allir þeir sem mæta til eftirlits á Landspítala á
þessum aldri. Einnig var kynjahlutfall þátttakenda
svipað og þeirra sem mæta til eftirlits á spítalann.
Þá var rannsóknin þversniðsrannsókn sem gerir
það að verkum að ógerlegt er að fullyrða um
orsakasamhengi. Þannig er til dæmis sá mögu-
leiki fyrir hendi að þunglyndi, kvíði og vandamál
tengd því að vera með sykursýki séu undanfari
bæði lítils félagslegs stuðnings og meiri notkunar
á tilfinningamiðuðum bjargráðum. Einnig getur
verið að slæm líkamleg heilsa takmarki möguleika
á samneyti við annað fólk sem getur orðið til þess
að vanlíðan viðkomandi aukist. Líklegt verður þó
að teljast að bjargráðastíll sé undanfari eða gegni
að minnsta kosti hlutverki í vanlíðaninni þar sem
yfirleitt er gert ráð fyrir að þar sé um fremur stöð-
ugt einkenni manna að ræða. Hvað sem þessu
líður gefa niðurstöðurnar til kynna að mjög mik-
ilvægt sé að kenna og efla notkun, eftir því sem
kostur er, á verkefnamiðuðum bjargráðum í stað
tilfinningamiðaðra bjargráða hjá fólki með syk-
ursýki. Má því ætla að þessi skjólstæðingahópur
Landspítala myndi hafa hag af sálfræðilegum inn-
gripum sem viðbót við hefðbundna meðferð. Þá er
ljóst að félagslegur stuðningur er afar mikilvægur
fyrir ungt fólk með sykursýki og því þarf að taka
mið af aðstandendum í meðferð og fræða þá um
sjúkdóminn og mikilvægi þess að veita viðeigandi
stuðning.
