SUMMARY Paleomagnetic polarity measurements in stratigraphy by Leó Kristjánsson Science Institute University of Icelancl Reykjavík Due to fortuitous circumstances, geologists in Iceland have been able to use paleomagnetic polarity zones, as delineated by measurements on hand samples in the field, in stratigraphic correlation within the late Tertiary to Ouater- nary lava pile. This article explains the phenomena upon which these measurements are dependent, and sets out various error sources and deficiencies of the field magnetic mcthod. It is discussed how some of these errors may be circumvented by proper procedures in i'ield measurements and interpretation, and how most of them are eliminated in standard laboratory measure- ments on oriented core samples. For additional information on historical or technical aspects of paleomagnetic research in Iceland, thc reader is referred to recent articles in Jökull (Leó Kristjánsson 1982, 1984).
