einhver af lesendum vorum vildi sýna þá velvild að auka dálitið bóka-
safnið, gæti hann sent pakka þangað með þessari utanáskript:

Einungis innbundnar bækur skyldi senda, þvi að enginn bókbindari er
i eyjunni. Bækur á íslenzku eða norrænum málum yrðu eðlilega mest
lesnar, en bókasafnið á nú þegar allmikið af enskum, frönskum, þýzkum
og ítölskum orðabókum og málfræðiságripum að mestu á islenzku og
dönsku. En alls konar bækur með myndum svo og albúm með prentuðum
myndum, ljósmyndum og myndakortum væru bæði til fróðleiks og skemmt-
unar fyrir ibúa þessarar fjarlægu og afskekktu eyjar.1
—Um leið og vér ljúkum við árganginn 1901 af “í Uppnámi” getum
vér ekki látið vera að minnast á eitt einkenni hans, sem að vissu leyti er
nýstárlegt fyrir skáktímarit. Aldrei hafa fyr svo mörg óútgefin skákdæmi
eptir svo marga höfunda af allra fyrsta flokki verið birt í einum árgangi
nokkurs skáktimarits. Þau eru eigi orðin til við neina samkeppni, heldur
hafa höfundar þeirra verið svo veglyndir að láta þau i té sem vott um
samkenndarþel þeirra til islenzkrar skákar og um áhuga þeirra á því, a𠻣
skáklist eflist i því landi, hvers bókmenntir og saga greina svo mörg merk
atvik, er snerta skák. Oss finnst því ástæða til i nafni allra íslenzkra
taflmanna að færa þessum mönnum beztu þakkir fyrir það, að þeir gjörðu
oss fært að mynda dálitið skákdæmasafn (i viðbætinum aptan við), sem að
vorri hyggju mun ávallt veitt allmikil athygli bæði vegna eigin verðleika
þess og vegna þess á hve einkennilegan hátt það birtist.2
1 The library recently founded for the use of the little community, which
inhabits the remote Arctic islet of Grímsey — somewliat to the South of which
the polar circle runs — is known as the “Eyjarbókasafn,” or “Island Library.”
The book-cases, which were shipped from Copenhagen last summer, already
contain some three hundred volumes, largcly in Icelandic, Danish and Swedish.
Included is a. little collection of grammars and dictionaries in various other
languages; and as the community has, for many centuries, devotedly cultivatcd
chess, a score or two of useful works on the game will be found on the library’s
Bhelves. The clergyman of the islaud — a man of education — is the librarian.
Should any generous reader desire to augment the treasures of this far-off book-
collection, the gifts should be addressed as stated in the text, and should be
forwarded by book-post (not parcels-post). On packages sent from America or
England the words: via Leith (Scotland) should be added to the above address.
Illustrated works of any kind, albums of engravings, photographs aud picture-
cards will be especially useful, but no unbouud books would be of lasting value.
