order. The documents deserve special attention because they can be
pinpointed in place and time. The collection of the examples for the
time before 1450 is exhaustive, whereas the examples from later docu-
ments have been found by chance.
(1) Document no. 1311 in ed. Stefán Karlsson 1963. (Earlier pub-
lished in DI II no. 509.) Most probably issued in Þingeyjarsýsla, nor-
thern Iceland. Written in 1344. Contains kliæde 1311.11, biækr 1311.
18, tuiærr biækr 1311.20, briædr 1311.22 (and viætt 13II.5).2 The manu-
script is AM 273 I 4°.
(2) Document no. 33 in ed. Stefán Karlsson 1963. (Earlier published
in DIIII no. 111.) Issued in Skálholt, Árnessýsla, southern Iceland, in
1360. Contains subj. viære 33.6. To be sure, according to Hægstad
1941:135 the document is in Norwegian, but this is hardly convincing,
as pointed out by Stefán Karlsson 1963:XXV. The document is a finan-
cial settlement between the bishops of Hólar and Skálholt, and may
thus have been written either by a Hólar (northern) or a Skálholt
(southern) scribe. The document belonged to the archives of the Hólar
diocese. The manuscript is AM Fasc. II 11.
(3) Document no. 112 in ed. Stefán Karlsson 1963. (Earlier pub-
lished in DI III no. 535.) Issued in Saurbær, Eyjafjörður, Eyjafjarðar-
sýsla, northern Iceland, in 1400. Contains saur biæ 112.3. The manu-
script is AM Fasc. V 28.
(4) Document no. 259 in ed. Stefán Karlsson 1963. (Earlier pub-
lished in DIIV no. 604.) Issued in Grenjaðarstaðir, Reykjadalur, Þing-
eyjarsýsla, northern Iceland, in 1437. Contains sniæbiorn 259.1. The
manuscript is AM Fasc. X 4.
(5) Document no. 108 in DI V. Issued in Grenjaðarstaðir, Reykja-
dalur, Þingeyjarsýsla, northern Iceland, in 1454. Contains liækiargil in
line 11 of the printed text. The manuscript is AM Fasc. XIII 18.
2 Examples such as viær ‘vér’, where iæ possibly represents an iæ-spelling of ‘æ’
(the development \ér>vœr being well known, and vcer~>viœr thus conceivable) are
not considered in the present paper, because their iæ can stand for ie<é. This
means, for instance, that the manuscript AM 61 fol. (Óláfs saga Tryggvasonar),
which contains only such examples of iæ-spellings (viz. hand víættv 76.10 and
viælum 104.3 in ed. Ólafur Halldórsson 1961) has been excluded from consider-
ation here. The iæ-spellings occasionally observed in venda ‘turn’ have been simi-
larly disregarded, although they occur in AM 53 fol. (Óláfs saga Tryggvasonar, see
337.36 in ed. Ólafur Halldórsson 1961) and in AM 66 fol. (Hulda, for the refer-
ences see ed. Louis-Jensen at press), both northern manuscripts.
