LÆKNABLAÐIÐ 183 SUMMARY A retrospective analysis was done on 68 patients diagnosed to have carcinoma of the pancreas at the Reykjavík City Hospital during the period 1974- 1983. Explorative laparotomy was most often performed as a diagnostic procedure (89,7%). It was not possible to evaluate the effect of new diagnostic techniques such as ultrasonography, computerized tomography and ERCP because they were not available at the hospital until late in the study period. The diagnosis was histologically confirmed in 75% of the patients. The tumor was most often located in the head of the pancreas (42,5%). In 25% of the patients location of the tumor was not reported or tumor margins could not be determined within the gland. Metastasis were diagnosed in 66,2% of the patients. The most common treatment was pallative surgical bypass of the biliary tract and/or gastro-jejunal bypass. Mean survival of all patients was 6,4 months (192 days). One patient lived more than three years and no patient was alive four years after diagnosis. HEIMILDIR 1. Levin DL, Connelly RR, Devesa SS.
