þeim 29 læknum og hjúkrunarfræðingum sem
ekki eru fylgjandi skráðum leiðbeiningum telja
79% lækna og 80% hjúkrunarfræðinga að slík-
ar leiðbeiningar kunni að hvetja um of til þess
að meðferð sé takmörkuð (mynd 2).
Töflur II og III sýna svör við spurningum 4
og 5 sem fjalla um hvernig taka beri á ágrein-
ingi um takmörkun meðferðar, annars vegar
innan heilbrigðisstétta og hins vegar milli heil-
brigðisstétta og skjólstæðinga. Einungis var
hægt að velja einn kost í hvoru tilviki. Læknar
og hjúkrunarfræðingar voru nokkuð sammála í
afstöðu sinni til dómstóla og töldu innan við
30% rétt að leita til dómstóla undir einhverjum
kringumstæðum. Af þeim sem völdu svar-
möguleikann atmað nefndu nokkrir yfirlækni
og aðrir sjúkrahúsprest.
Nær allir þátttakendur lýstu sig sammála
þeirri fullyrðingu að rétt sé að leyfa ákvörð-
unarhæfum, ólæknandi, deyjandi sjúklingi að
hafna lífslengjandi meðferð ef hann æskir þess,
enginn sagði nei og aðeins rúmlega 1% voru
óvissir. Flestir töldu að þeir myndu virða slíkar
óskir, þar var hlutfall óvissra 4,5%. Hið gagn-
