About the authors Allyson Macdonald is a professor at the Iceland University of Education. She completed an honours degree in physics in South Africa (1976) and has a doctoral degree in science education from Oregon State University (1981). She has carried out research in science education and in the use of information and communication technology in schools, particularly in the areas of curriculum evaluation, development and implementation. E-mail: allyson@khi.is Eggert Lárusson is a lecturer in geography and the teaching of geography at the Iceland University of Education. He took his B.Sc. degree in geography in 1974 at the University of Iceland and a B.Ed. at the Iceland University of Education in 1982. In 1984 he was awarded his Ph.D. from Durham University in England. For most of his professional life Eggert has been a teacher in secondary schools. He has been a lecturer at the Iceland University of Education since 2003. His main research interests are in researching science education in Icelandic compulsory schools. He graduated with a B.Sc. degree in biology and a B.A. in psychology from the University of Iceland, and M.Sc. and fil.dr. in psychology from the University of Lund. His main research interests within the field of education have been international comparisons of students’ academic achievement, school effectiveness, national examinations, learning disabilities, and construction and standardization of achievement tests. E-mail: eing@hi.is Emilía Guðmundsdóttir is a psychologist at the State Diagnostic and Counselling Centre. She holds a B.A. degree and Cand. psych. in psychology from the University of Iceland. E-mail: emilia@greining.is Guðmundur Engilbertsson is an adjunct lecturer and consultant at the University of Akureyri in the Faculty of Education and at the School Development Centre. His teaching is mainly in the field of teaching strategies, assessment, and methods. His work at the School Development Centre is mainly concerned with the development of teaching methods and assessment, with emphasis on strengthening reading comprehension and increasing vocabulary.
