had conc. of 8/10 and above.
29/12 The eastern boundary running from
6900/2215 to 6730/2737 to 6730/2822 had conc.
of 1/10 brash and block. — The area from
6730/2822 to 6725/2920 had a conc. of 7/10
brash and block and 1/10 small and medium
floes. - The area from 6725/2920 to 6728/3005
hacl conc. of 4/10 brash and block. The boun-
dary from 6728/3005 to 6600/3445 had a conc.
of 1/10 brash and block. From there to
the boundary end at 6551/3600 had conc. of
7/10 brash and block and 1/10 small and me-
clium floes. Frozen puddles were sighted at
6851/2335 and at 6830/2500 and 6747/2710.
Bergy-bits and growlers were reported about
6844/2437, many icebergs at 6612/3437 and a
few at 6555/3530.
JANUARY 1959.
The distance from Cape Straumhes to the
ice edge was 65 mi.les at t.he begin and end of
month.
7/1 The eastern boundary of the Greenland
ice ran from 6900/1915 to 6813/2042 to 6808/
2243 to 6730/2400 to 6725/2544 to 6628/2827
to 6631/3055 to 6537/3330 The conc. of the
ice from the boundary to a line 5 miles west
was 1/10 brash and block. A polynya was sighted
6835/2250 to 6818/2355 to 6825/2407. Raftecl
ice was reported from 6712/2900 to 6723/3005.
30/1 The eastern boundary running from
7143/0915 to 6824/1700 to 6837/1820 had a con-
centration of 4/10—6/10 mostly medium floes
and brash. From 6837/1820 the boundary went
almost straight to 6705/2600, thence to 6713/
2657 to 6644/2554 to 6700/2800 with conc. of
5/10 small ancl medium floes. There was one
small polynya sighted at 6852/1546. The area
from the boundary to six miles east had conc.
of 1/10 brash and block.
FEBRUARY 1959.
The distance from C. Straumnes to the ed.ge
of the Greenland ice is álmost the same as at
the end of January, but in the south the ice
area has expanded so the distance from Cape
Látrabjarg to the ice is only 60 miles.
24/2 The eastern boundary of the Greenland
ice ran from Sörkap of Jan Mayen to 6917/
1300 to 6913/1520 to 6830/1738 to 6800/2222
to 6736/2300 to 6700/2510 to 6511/2727.
24/2 A big ice floe was sighted 1 to li/ó mile
of Cape Straumnes with 5—10 smaller floes
around.
MARCH 1959.
The average distance of the ice edge from
C. St.raumnes var about 70 miles with. nearest
approach of 50 miles.
3/3 The ice edge was running from Jan
Mayen to 7030/1000 to 6930/1200 to 6810/1517
to 6755/1615 to 6747/2435 to 6751/2800.
8/3 The ice edge observed at 7050/0800 to
7019/1000 to 6840/1200 to 6755/1300 to 6735/
1500 to 6725/1800 to 6740/1900 to 6745/2000
to 6721/2200 to 6711/2400 to 6700/2700 to
6500/3100.
16/3 The eastern pack boundary ran from
7200/1130 to 7057/1025 to 7013/1254 to 6930/
1227’ to 6830/1300 to 6830/1500 to 6817/1612
to 6825/1632 to 6804/1930 to 6800/2222 to
6742/2250 to 6737/2400.
18/3 The Catalina flying boat Rán of the
Coastal Guard flew 12 miles N of Grimsey and
12 miles N of Cape Horn in fine weather and
excellent visibilitly without sighting any ice.
The pilot, Guðjón Jónsson, states that no ice
is within at least 40 miles distance from Gríms-
ey or Cape Horn.
APRIL 1959.
The distance of the ice edge from Cape
Straumhes was 55 to 60 miles. On April 7 the
ice edge is only some 20 miles north. of Kol-
beinsey.
7/4 The boundary was running from 7000/
1450 to 6945/1515 to 6928/1501 'to 6900/1550
to 6750/1500 to 6720/1734 to 6731/1820 to
6733/2310 to 6658/2600 to 6713/2640 to 6707/
2655 to 6641/2633 to 6643/2700 to 6555/2833
to 6605/2900 to 6558/2928 to 6613/2950 to
6610/3015 to 6552/3015 to 6504/3144'to 6502/
3230. Further from 6516/3513 to 6455/3600 to
6450/3723 to 6425/3745 to 6404/3850 to 6330/
3852 to 6318/3955 to 6107/4042 to 5930/4200
to 5955/4315. On April 7 the Norwegian seal-
hunter „Selfisk“ was destroyed in the ice at
6940/1500.
22/4 The boundary ran from Jan Mayen to
7027/1020 to 7000/1230 to 6900/1500 to 6850/
1621 to 6800/2000 to 6730/2300 to 6700/2500
to 6630/2827 to 6600/3100 to 6535/3400.
