APPENDIX: Many pictures of the Katla erup-
tion in 1918 and the effecls of tlie accompanying
jökulhlaup, luere ta.ken in 1918 and 1919 by
the photographer Kjartan Gudmundsson, then
living in Vík. Kjartan visited the Katla area on
Jime 23rd 1919 and again on September 12th
t-he same year. Some of these pictures are now
published for the first time.
