Heathland, grassy ground, on gravel and sand, in meadows and móland ; in copses;
both on dry and wet soil; often along brooks.
Max. height: 30 cm; average: 11 cm (sterile stems 12 cm).
Geogr. area: N. Am. from Alaska and Ellesmere Land south to Oregon, Nevada,
Wyoming.—Greenl.: W. 60°—72°30'. E. 60°—79°30'.—Eur.: E.S.I.; Scandinavia,
southward to Spain. Caucasus. Spitsbergen, Novaya Zemlya.—Asia: From the

In N., N.W. and S.W. common; in E. only recorded from Grunnólfsvíkurfjall
(Guðm. Hjaltason) ; in S. from Skálabrekka in Þingvallasveit, 1935, and at
Kálfstindar at Laugarvatnsvellir, 1935 (Hjörtur Björnsson).—In the central plateau
found at Hveravellir, c. 430 m s. m. (J.Gr., 1934, V.R., 1935).
Life-form: Ch.
On heaths and in copses, on grassy slopes, in screes, on mossy ground; especially in
the hills. Often fertile.
Max. height: 14 cm ; average : 6 cm (erect branches) ; length of creeping shoots
up to 70 cm.

This species has as yet only been found in the northern, western and south-
western parts of Iceland, see fig. 16. In N.W. it seems rather common ; in the other
parts where it is found it occurs here and there. The var. pungens Desv. (var.
alpestre Hartm.), with shorter and more rigid, pointed, erect or appressed leaves, is
more common in Iceland than the typical form.
