THE PTERIDOPHYTA AND SPERMATOPHYTA OF ICELAND
351
Plantago media Linn.
Lindsay, 1861, p. 31.—Babington, 1871, p. 323.—Bennet, 1896, p. 354.
Lindsay, loc. cit., mentions this plant without locality. Bennet, loc. cit., gives
two localities: Reykholt, W., and Seljaland, S,-—Babington, loc. cit., expresses his
doubt concerning it. No specimens are in evidence, and it should certainly be
excluded from the Icelandic Flora.
Rubiaceae.
Galium Aparine Linn.
Preyer & Zirkel, 1861, p. 365.—Baring-Gould, 1863, p. 429.—Babington, 1871,.
p. 310.—H. Jdnsson, 1896, p. 351.—Stefánsson, Fl. ísl., ed. 1, 1901, p. 185.—Ibid.,
ed. 2, 1924, p. 210,—O. & Gr., 1934, p. 132.
First recorded by Preyer & Zirkel, loc. cit., without locality, and afterwards
found in some few places at farmsteads: Hallormsstaður, E. (H.J., 1893); Sogn
in Svarfaðardalur, N. (St.St., 1919) ; Kornsá, N. (St.St., 1889) ; Kollafjarðarnes,
N.W. (coll. G.B.). It has been accidentally introduced, and is evidently not
naturalized in Iceland.
372. Galium boreale Linn., Sp. pl. ed. I (1753) p. 108.
K. & M., 1770, p. 205.—Babington, 1871, p. 310,—Gronlund, Isl. Fl., 1881,.
p. 74.—Stefánsson, Fl. ísl., ed. 1, 1901, p. 185.—Ibid., ed. 2, 1924, p. 210.—

Icelandic: Krossmaðra. Danish : Trenervet Snerre. English : Northern Bedstraw.
Common in S.W., W. and E. and more or less frequent in the other parts, except
in N.W., whence it has not so far been recorded. In the central parts it is recorded
from Hvítárvatn, Hveravellir and Arnarfell hið mikla (J.Gr., 1934), and at
Landmannahellir and Laugar, by S.S., 1931.

Galium Brandegeei Gray, in Proceed. Am. Acad. (1877) p. 58.
Two samplcs of Galium, previously determined as G. trifidum in H.H., have,
with some doubt, been referred to this species by A. E. Porsild (cp. M. P. Porsild,
Medd. om Gronl., LXXVII, 1930, p. 26). The samples in question are, however,
too scanty for a definite identification, and it may bc safer to await better and
more copious material before this species is admitted to the Icelandic Flora. See
also under G. trifidum. G. Brandegeei Gray is known from many places in W. Green-
land from between 60° 10' and 64°20' N. lat., and from E. Greenland in 65°37'
N. lat. In N. Am. G. Brandegeei is widely distributed in Newfoundland and Labrador,
Gaspé county, alpine placcs in New Mexico, California. (Cp. M. P. Porsild, loc. cit.,
p. 24 et seq.).
Galium Mollugo Linn.
K. & M., 1770, p. 205.—Gliemann, 1824, p. 138.—Babington, 1871, p. 311.
