Icelandic: Tjarnastör, Ljósastör, Ljósalykkja, Blástör. Danish: Tosnablet Star.
English: Slender-beaked Sedge.
In Iceland there occur at least two distinct types of this species:
a: one which always seems to grow in the water of smaller lakes and ponds in a
zone from about 30 cm and deeper; thus for instance at Mývatn, N. This variety
is high and coarse, very broad-leaved, and seems to agree well with the diagnosis of
var. utriculata (Boott) Bailey (1886).
b: The other variety seems to correspond with the var. borealis Hartman, Handbok
in Scand. Flora, ed. 1 (1820) p. 39. This form is lower of stature, with narrow
leaves, and usually grows in drier localities where water does not cover the ground
all the summer.
It is remarkable that in Iceland C. inflata does not seem to develop ripe achenes,
at least I have never seen Icelandic specimens with normally developed achenes.
Common in most parts of the lowland; in the highland recorded from Hvítár-
vatn, Múlaver and Blágnýpa (J.Gr., 1934). Geldingsá, Eyvindarver, Illugaver,
Siðumannaafrjettur (S.S., 1938).
Life-form: HH (Helophyte).
In lakes with shallow water, in moors and bogs.
Flor. VII; (fr. mat. ?).
Max. height: 70 cm; average: 39 cm.
