Icelandic: Bláklukka. Danish: Blaaklokke. English: Harebell, Bluebell. (“Hair-
bell” in Babington, Manual of British Botany, 1922, p. 273).
Very variable: var. arctica Lge., with larger flowers (corolla about 2.5 cm long,
and usually only a single flower on each stem, the latter usually lower than in the
typical plant. Basal leaves usually ovate. Frequent in E.
Common in E. Icel. in N. in the tracts af Eyjafjörður; also common from
Skeiðará, S., to Lónsheiði, in E. (H.J., 1905, p. 79) ; here and there in the other
parts; not recorded from the central highland; see fig. 166.
Life-form: H.
In nearly all kinds of dry localities.

Max. height: 40 cm; average: 18 cm.
Geogr. area: Am.: Labrador to Alaska, southward to New Jersey, the Great Lake
region and Nebraska ; California.-—Greenl.: W. 60°—75°. E. 60°—74°30'.—
Eur.: Fær.; E.S.I.; from 71°7' N. lat. in Scandinavia throughout Europe, except
in the southernmost parts.—Asia : Siberia.

In Iceland as well as in S. Greenland and in Scandinavia, this species seems

flora, but only in two cases is the height
above sea-level indicated more precisely,
viz. Benediktshnjúkur east of Höfða-
hverfi, and Austurfjall, east of Dals-
mynni; both localities are about 820 m
s. m. (cp. I.Ó., 1927, p. 52). Found on
both sides of Eyjafjörður, and in one
locality in Skagafjörður (Viðvík). See
fig. 167.
Life-form : H.
Fell-field, gravelly soil, rock-ledges, open
heathland, especially at a somewhat high
level.
