Common in all parts, in the lowland as well as the central highland; in the
hills it is found at least up to 1000 m s. m., e.g. in Kerlingarfjöll (J.Gr., 1934) ;
often in the snow-patches in company with Salix herbacea.
In some of the Icelandic specimens the capsules are pubescent with glandless
hairs, and the sepals are pilose on back as well as on the margins; they may be
placed under the var. lasiocarþa Hartm. (Syn. var. australis Wg.). See fig. 156.
f. albiflora, with white flowers occurs now and then.
