SUMMARY Geophysics and archeology by Leó Kristjánsson, Science Institute University of Iceland, Dunhaga3 107 Reykjavík Considerable interest in archeological prospecting has been generated by the search for the remains of the 17th Century Dutch East Indiaman Het Wapen van Amsterdam in SE-Iceland since 1960. The principles of several current geophysical exploration methods are reviewed. Prob- lems of execution and interpretation are explained in the light of experience and local conditions. It is concluded that detailed ground magnetic surveys are the most promising search method. Much attention must be given to geographical research and to the critical examination of all relevant historical documents. Accu- rate position recording is also essential for the satisfactory completion of such a sur- vey: this has hitherto been a weak link in much of the search effort in SE-Iceland. 59
