The relative breadth of the hand is somewhat less
in Icelanders (5,1) than in Norwegians (5,2), and the index
of the hand a little greater in Norwegians (41,7) than
in Icelanders (46,1).
The relative length of t h e span is in Icelanders, 104, in
Norwegians, according to H. Daa, 103,6. When it is taken into
account that I had the arms carefully stretched to maximum
the difference is unimportant.
b) The relative (projective) measux-ements of the ix e t h e r
extremities are the following:
Icel. Norweg.
Length of the thigh 27,3 26,9
— — — leg 22,7 23,5
Height of the sphyrion 4,3 3,8
Total length of the extremity1) 54,3 54,3
The relative length of the lower extremities is indentical in
Icelandei's and Norwegians and the height of tibiale almost the
same (Icelanders 27,4, Norwegians 27,3). Nevertheless the
lengths of the parts or components are different especially the
height of sphyrion, but the difference is probably partly an
effect of different location of the sphyrion point. The consider-
able difference of llie tibio-femorial indices (Ice-
landers 83,2, Norwegians 86,9 calculated from the means above)
is probably of the same origin.
In spite of the different lengths of the parts, I consider it
the most important fact that the total length of the nether ex-
tremities and the height of the tibiale is nearly the same in
botli nations. This indicates that the diffei*ence of the netlier
extremities is very slight, except perhaps that the height of
the sphyrion is somewhat greater in Icelanders than Nor-
wegians and the length of the leg correspondingly less.
The length of the lower limb relatively to the length of the
trunk (sy—sst) is 183,6 in Icelanders and 182,3 in Norwegi-
ans. The difference is caused by different length of the trunk.
The intermembralindex, calculated by the means
above is 82,9 in Icelanders and 82,5 in Norwegians. When
calculated from the whole matei’ials of the author (men 20—
40 ys.) and Halfdan Bryn, the difference is somewhat greater
(83,19 and 79,7).
One may briefly say that the build of the Icelanders is such,
1) The height of iliospinale -h 4 cm.
