The purpose of this article was to gain an
understanding of dignity within the context of
healthcare and how patients’ dignity can be
maintained and enhanced in day-to-day nursing
practice.
Scoping studies. A comprehensive search was
conducted using the databases PubMed, Web of
Science og Scopus, from 1997 to 2017. Search
terms were: Dignity in healthcare, dignity nursing,
fostering dignity. To maintain and enhance patients, dignity, nurses
need to interact with patients in a way that reflects
the uniqueness of the patient and the environment
needs to be comfortable and peaceful.

A final selection of fourteen papers met the
inclusion criteria. Twelve were qualitative studies,
one was a theoretical paper and one a concept
analysis. Fifty-seven themes were identified in
these 14 papers. These themes were compared
and analysed into four new themes to describe
dignity within the context of health care and
highlight practical applications. These themes were
person-centered care, qualities in nurse‘s behavior,
communication and environment.
