Icelandic: Hlíðaburkni. English: Parsley Fern. Rock Fern.
This species was first recorded by Vahl, l.c., but later on only Lindsay, loc. cit.,
and Babington, loc. cit., admitted it in their lists. No locality was given by Vahl.
In 1932, however, Árni Friðriksson, M.sc., Reykjavík, found a small fern growing
in abundance on basaltic rock-shelves above the herring-meal factory at Hesteyri in
ísafjörður. Mag. Friðriksson sent me a sample of his material, and it proved to be
C. crisþa (L.) R.Br. It has later been gathered in the same place by other botanists.
The Icelandic specimens collected are of rather a low stature, the fertile fronds not
exceeding 10 cm. Specimens from the British Isles measure from 6—12 inches
(= 15—30 cm). See fig. 24.
Life-form : H.
On rock-ledges.
Geogr. area: S. Am.: ? Chile.—Eur.: Fær.; E.S.I.; Scandinavia, western and
central Europe, Balkan, Caucasus.—Western Asia.

Flora Dan. tab. 401.
Icelandic: Tóugras. Danish: Bægerbregne. English : Brittle Fern, Bladder Fern.
The Icelandic plant is very variable with respect to the size and form of the
fronds, and as far as can be seen, it does not correspond very well with any of the
two varieties occurring in Scandinavia, viz. var. regia (L.) Bernoulli, Gefáss-
kryptogamen d. Schweiz (1857) p. 44 (cp. also Holmberg in Skand. Flora, háfte 1,
p. 5), or with var. Baenitzii (Dörffler) Warnstorff in Asch. & Graebner, Syn. I
(1896), p. 17, syn. var. Dickieana (Sim.) Moore, Handb. Brit. Ferns (1848), p. 81.
See also Sv. botan. Tidskr., 1909, p. 384 (with figures of spores).
Common throughout Iceland, especially in the lowland, but also found in several
places in the central highland, in the country around Hveravellir and at Hvítárvatn
(J.Gr., 1934) ; Laugahraun (S.S.).
Life-form: H.
In urðs, caves in the rocks, under overhanging cliffs, in rock-crevices, ravines, shady
places, copses.
Max. height: 35 cm; average: 20 cm.
Geogr. area: Am.: (partly var. americana) Arctic and temperate regions. S. Am.—-
Greenl.: W. 60°—79°. E. 60°—79°30'.—Eur.: Fær.; E.S.I.; throughout Eur. Novaya
Zemlya.—Asia : Arctic and temperate regions.—Australia : New Zealand.
Cystoþteris dentata Sm. recorded by Hooker from Iceland (Garðahraun near Rey-
kjavík—Sp. Fil. I. 198), cp. Babington, 1871, p. 348, is a variety of C. fragilis.
