Common in all parts, in the lowland as also in the central highland (Hvítárvatn,
Gránunes, Hveravellir, J.Gr., 1934). Valuable fodder-grass.
Mature caryopses are not very often found in the Icelandic herbarium specimens,
and it would seem that on the whole ripe fruits are very sparingly produced in this
species.
Life-form : H.
It often forms the bulk of the vegetation on grassy slopes; often abundant in the
bottom layer in woods and copses; in home fields (tún) ; around inhabited places.

Mohr, 1786, p. 157, and all the older authors up to Babington (1871, p. 343), quote
this species as being found in Iceland, but it is very doubtful whether it has really
been found here.

Widely distributed throughout Iceland both in the lowland and in the central
highland ; in E. Icel., however, it seems to be rather rare.

In wet meadows and ditches, on the borders of shallow waters, often floating in
water.
