The Botany of Iceland - 01.12.1942, Blaðsíða 135
THE PTERIDOPHYTA AND SPERMATOPHYTA OF ICELAND
133
Icelandic: Villihafri, Ginhafri. Danish : Draphavre. English : Button-Grass, Haver-
Grass.
Helgi Jónsson (loc. cit.) found this species growing in abundance, together with
Festuca pratensis, below sea-fowl cliffs at Pjetursey, south of Mýrdalsjökull, S. It
was flowering (23.VII.1901), and the culms measured up to 80 cm. It has most
likely originally been introduced, but will probably be able to maintain its foot-
hold here.
Life-form: H.
Geogr. area: Am. : North Am. (introduced).—Eur. : Fær. introduced. E.S.I.;
throughout Europe outside the Arctic.—Asia: Western Asia.—N. Africa; Canary
Isl.—Australia (introduced).
Avena sativa Linn.
Recorded by some authors as found here and there as an escape from cultivation.
Briza media Linn.
Preyer & Zirkel, 1861, p. 359.—Babington, 1871, p. 344.
Recorded by P. & Z., loc. cit., but, as far as I know, there is no evidence of
its having been found in Iceland. Babington, loc. cit., declares that it is a very
doubtful native. It should be excluded from the Icelandic Flora.
Of the genus Bromus there are various records from Iceland, see below.
Bromus arvensis Linn.
Is found in some few localities as an escape from cultivation: Kollugerði at
Akureyri (J.Li.), Reykjanes (I.D.), Hallormsstaður (J.Gr.).
Bromus brizaejormis Fisch.
Rostrup, 1887, p. 185.
A specimen from Blöndudalsbakki (coll. B. Þorleifsson) is kept in H.H.
Bromus hordeaceus L.
Preyer & Zirkel, 1862, p. 359.
A rather doubtful record.
Bromus mollis Linn.
H. Jónsson, 1913, p. 31,—Stefánsson, 1919, p. 32.
In H.H. there is a specimen collected at Reykjavik by Helgi Jónsson. Undoubtedly
accidentally introduced (see St.St., 1. c.).
Bromus racemosus Linn.
ni\f and Stcfánsson, 1901, p. 51, record this species from Hólasandur
near ývatn, N., but add that it has probably been introduced.
