JOHS. GRONTVED
In Iceland M. effusum occurs mainly in the northern and northwestern parts.
It is also found on the Snæfellsnes peninsula, and in two places in S. (at Laugar-
dalur in Flói and at Deildarárgil in Mýrdalur. See fig. 45.
Seems to thrive very well in Iceland, and in favourable localities it may attain
a height of about 2 m.
Life-form: H.
In Betula and Salix scrub; grass- and herb-slopes; in crevices in the lava fields, etc.
Flor. VII; fr. mat. VII—VIII.
Max. height: 200 cm; average : 115 cm.

This species was first recorded by K. & M. ; and T. & G., loc. cit., record it
as found at Eiðar on Lagarfljót, E. (D. 7). Gronlund, loc. cit., includes it on
T. & G.’s authority. There are, however, no specimens in evidence, and most likely
there has been a mistake; perhaps the specimen in question has been Calamagrostis
neglecta. It should be excluded from the Icelandic flora.

While Nardus stricta is rather frequent or even rather common in E., N., N.W.,
W. and S.W., it has hitherto been found in few places only in S., e.g. at Vík (A.J.,
1933). Dr. E. Hadac, however (in mscr., 1938) records it from Seltjörn, Seltún at
Krlsuvík, Vatnavellir, Geitafell, Kolviðarhóll, Vífilfell, Stóra Reykjafell and Leir-
dalur. There are no records from the central parts.
