Very variable. In Iceland it occurs in two distinct varieties, both belonging to
the subform cuspidata (Wg.) Almquist in Bot. Notiser, 1891, p. 126.
a. var. borealis Almq. : Culms low, 15—20 cm high ; spikes slender, 3—5 mm broad
and about 2-—5 cm long, oblong cylindric, rather lax-flowered, yellowish-brown;
rare.
b. var. kattegatensis (Fr.) Almq.: Culms high (30—60 cm), coarse ; spikes 5—10 mm
broad, longer than in the preceding plant, densely flowered, usually reddish-brown;
plant dark green. The common form in Iceland, and found in many parts, though,
