In wet bogs and marshes; in lakes with shallow water, usually near the sea.

Common in all parts in the lowland as well as in the highland; often growing
in large masses in the moors at a higher level.
Recorded from the central highland in the following localities: Hvítárvatn,
Gránunes, Blágnýpukvisl, Nauthagi (J.Gr., 1934) ; Orravatnarústir (Th.S., 1930) ;
Syðri Pollar (T.T., 1896).

In bogs, wet places; in tarns with gravelly bottom and more or less dried out in
the summer.

In previous works on the Icelandic flora this species has figured as C. Oederi.
Recent investigations of the Icelandic material, carried out by Konservator K. Wiin-
stedt, Copenhagen, have shown that the Icelandic specimens may be referred to
C. serotina Mérat, while the “Carex Oederi” specimens from the Færoes belong to
C. demissa Hornemann.1
