From the herbarium specimens, from the literature, and from records made by
field botanists it would seem that this species is rather common in the parts around
Eyjafjörður, N., as also in the western part of South Iceland. It has likewise been
found near Mývatn, near the northern coast of Melrakkasljetta and in Skagafjörður,
all in N., and at Hornafjörður in S.E. Not often flowering. See fig. 66.
The form submersa Hj. Nilss. is frequent.
Life-form : HH (Helophyte).
On moist clayey soil, on mud, in ponds and lakes with shallow water.

Max. height: 13 cm ; average : 5 cm.

In Iceland there occurs only what seems to be the var. austriacus Aschers. & Graebn.,
Synopsis, II, 2 (1903) p. 300 = Trichoþhorum austriacum Palla, Ber. d. Deutsch.
Bot. Gesellsch. XV, p. 468 (1897). It is a lower, more slender plant. The orifice
of the uppermost sheath is, opposite the leaf-blade, usually not cut more than one
mm deep. The margin of the sheath is narrow, membranous, whitish or pale-brownish,
and closely appressed to the culm. In the Færoes it is replaced by the var. germanicus
(Palla).
Often growing abundantly in company with Erioþhorum angustifolium, Carex
chordorrhiza and other sedges.
Rather common throughout the lowlands; not recorded from the central plateau.
Life-form: H.
In moors, on moist grassy slopes and heath.
