Common throughout the lowland; rare in the central highland, seems to be
replaced there by J. arcticus. Where growing abundantly in the lowland, it is used
for hay.
In many cases it may be very difficult to distinguish between the Icclandic
specimens of J. balticus and J. arcticus; altogether there seem to be transitional forms
between the two spccies ; for hybrids also occur, see below. A rather variable species.
Life-form: G. (Rhizome Geophyte).
On moist sandy soil, on heaths, grass moors, river-banks.

Max. height: 45 cm ; avcrage : 25 cm.
