This species is recorded from a few places in Iceland, see fig. 72 ; herbarium
specimens from two places are kept in H.H., viz. from Kaldalón, N.W. (coll. St.St.,
1893), and from Hafrárdalur, N.? (coll. St.St., 1891). These specimens were
determined by Prof. G. Samuelsson, Stockholm; the other records are given by
Dr. Johs. Lid in Oslo (in literis). The specimens measured from 16 to 23 cm, and
were fruiting in July.

pathians, Pyrenees.—Asia : Northern parts to Kamchatka, Japan.—Australia : New
Zealand.

Recorded for Iceland by Bennet, loc. cit. Evidently a mistake, as also the locality
indicated : “Havebrugscand.” will show.

This species is entered in some of the older lists. In some cases, cp. Babington,
loc. cit., T. þalustris has been wrongly identified with this species; no specimen
of T. calyculata from Iceland is in evidence; and it should be omitted from the
Icelandic flora. See below.

Common throughout Iceland, in the lowland as well as the central highland. In
the central plateau it is found in the most barren and exposed localities, and it is
also met with near the hot springs, e.g. at Hveravellir.
Life-form: H.
In fell-field, grassy heaths, Grimmia-heath ; in moderately moist moors, meadows; on
moist sandy lake shores.
