According to Fernald (Rhodora, 1929, p. 1502, and map 33) the Icelandic plant
should be referred to the var. straminea (Fern.) Morris, Fern. in Rhodora, Vol. 28,
1926, p. 174. This variety occurs on the Færoes, in Iceland, Greenland and on New-
foundland, while the main species occurs in other parts of Europe. The difference
between the two varieties does not on the whole seem to be of great significance.
Common throughout the lowland. In the central highland found in Fróðárdalur,
at Karlsdráttur on Hvítárvatn, and on Arnarfell hið mikla at Hofsjökull (J.Gr.,
1934).
