THE PTERIDOPHYTA AND SPERMATOPHYTA OF ICELAND
201
The records of Ophrys camtschatea (Neottia camtschatea) probably refer to N.
Nidus-avis, cp. Babington, loc. cit., but there is no evidence of this species having
been found in Iceland. Most probably the plant in question was Corallorhiza trifida,
see this.
Nigritella nigra (L.) Rchb. f.
Satyrium nigrum, K. & M., 1770, p. 210.—N. angustifolia (Rich.), Baring-Gould,.
1863, p. 434.—N. nigra Rchb., Babington, 1871, p. 331.
This species has been recorded in all the older lists from König’s to Babington’s,
1871. No specimens are in evidence, and it may be safe to exclude it from the Ice-
landic Flora.
Orchis incarnatus L.
Orchis cruentus, Gliemann, 1824, p. 147.—O. cruentus Mull., Fries, Babington, 1871,
p. 330.
Recorded by Gliemann, loc. cit., and entered in Babington’s list. It may be a
mistake for O. maculatus, and the same may be the case with O. cruentus (Willd.),
cited by Baring-Gould, 1863, p. 434.
157. Orchis latifolius Linn., Sp. pl. ed. I (1753) p. 941.

This species is exceedingly rare in Iceland. It was first recorded by K. & M.,
loc. cit., and Babington has mentioned it as numerous in the neighbourhood of
Reykjavík, but in his list from 1871 (p. 330) he states that we are apparently con-
cerned with O. maculatus. In H.H. there are specimens from two localities only, viz.,
“Prope Geysers”, S. (coll. C. C. Babington, 1846), and Kaldalón, N.W. (coll. St.St.,
1893).
Otherwise there are records from various places (cp. I.D., loc. cit.), but how far
these records are trustworthy, it is impossible to tell; moreover, the records of
o. latifolius from the Færoes must, according to P. Vermeulen (in literis), be re-
ferred to O. purþurella Stephensen p. & f.
Life-form: G. (Root-tuber Geophyte).
Flor. VII; fr. mat. (?).
Max. height: 19 cm ; average : 16 cm.
Geogr. area: Eur.: E.S.I.; South Scandinavia, central and S. Eur., Caucasus.—
Asia: Siberia, western Asia, Persia.

May be considered common in most parts, except in the central plateau, whence
it has n°t hitherto been recorded.
