Icelandic: Mjaðjurt. Danish: Almindelig Mjodurt. English: Meadow-Sweet, Lady-
of-the-Meadow.
Rather frequent to common in S., S.W. and N. In N.W., here and there in the
fiords facing Breiðifjörður. In E. rather rare. Not recorded from the central parts
or found at a higher level at all. See fig. 111.
Often cultivated in gardens as an ornamental plant.
Life-form: H.
On grassy slopes, herb-slopes, in birch-copses, in moist places.
Flor. VII—VIII; fr. mat. (VIII—IX).
Max. height: 80 cm; average: 30 cm.
Geogr. area : Am.: Quebec to Massachusetts (introduced).—Eur.: Fær.; E.S.I.;
throughout Europe from southemmost Scandinavia to Spain, France and Italy.
Balkan states.—Asia: Northern Siberia, southward to Asia Minor, and Altai and
eastern Mongolia.

Geogr. area: Am. : Naturalized from Eur. in the eastern and middle States; north-
ward apparently native.—Eur.: E.S.I.; from 70°38' N. lat. in Scandinavia to the
Mediterranean Sea; Caucasus.—Asia: Temperate parts, eastward to Lake Baikal.—
Africa: Madeira.
