Common in N., and in parts of S. and S.W., otherwise rare; not recorded from
E. or from the central highland. See fig. 124.
The dwarfish form : f. minima Hoppe = f. terrestris Gliick, with densely set
linear leaves (1—5 mm long, 0.5—1 mm broad) ; at the apex the leaves are +
lanceolate; stems usually creeping or prostrate. Growing in dried out pools or on
+ dry soil.
f. caespitosa C. F. Schulz, has all leaves or most of them spathulate (6.5—14.5
mm long, 2.5—5 mm broad) ; growing on moist muddy ground, where the stems
may obtain a length of up to 30 cm.

In shallow water, in ponds and ditches; often at the hot springs.

from northernmost Scandinavia and Kola to the Alps.—Asia: Temperate regions
southward to China and Japan. Kamchatka.—N. Afr.
