While M. alternijlorum is common in Iceland, it seems that M. sþicatum is rare.
It is frequent in the lake Mývatn and its environs, and otherwise only found in a
very few places, see fig. 129.
Life-form : HH. (Hydrophyte).
In fairly large lakes.
Flor. VII—VIII; fr. mat. (?).
Max. length of shoots: 100 cm; average: 70 cm.
Geogr. area: Am.: From Newfoundland to Alaska, southward to southern Cali-
fornia ; Florida, Texas.—Greenl.: W. 66°55'—70°30'.—Eur.: E.S.I.; throughout
Eur., from northern Scandinavia and Russia.—Asia: Northern, western and central
Asia, China, Japan, Formosa, Kamchatka.—N. and S. Africa.

This species has been recorded as found at Hafnarfjörður (Solander, in Ba-
bington, loc. cit.). Ól. Davíðsson records it from Úlfsbær in Bárðardalur, N. (cp. Ste-
fánsson, 1924, loc. cit.). See fig. 129.—As far as I know, there has never been any
specimen to corroborate the records, and there may be some doubt about the correct
determination of the specimens in question.
