A B S T R A C T
As stated in the Education and Training Service Centre’s
(ETSC) service contract with the Ministry of Education, Sci-
ence and Culture writing and developing curricula or course
descriptions is a central task. Since 2003, 39 curricula have
been written at the centre. They are diverse and relate to a
broad range of sectors of the economy. The curricula desc-
ribe on-the-job training, in the sectors of tourism, commerce,
fishing industry as well as the fields of health and social
services. There are also course descriptions for Icelandic,
mathematics, English and problem solving in technology-
rich environments. The ETSC syllabuses have been written in
coherence with quality standards set by the Centre in 2006.
A special committee certified the syllabuses and course
descriptions on behalf of the Ministry of Education Science
and Culture according to set standards. The committee cea-
sed working in the spring of 2012, after the Act on Adult
Education 2010 came into effect. In regulation following the
law states that syllabuses should be written according to
quality standards set by the Ministry of Education, Science
and Culture (Regulation on Adult Education nr. 1163/2011).
The standards were published in September 2013. The curri-
cula written by the Centre in 2012 have been accredited for
one year experimental teaching.
