A B S T R A C T Globalisation has resulted in the world becoming a universal market place where knowledge, people and technology can move between countries unimpeded by national boundaries. Technical advances, especially the internet, have made glo- balisation possible. It is now generally acknowledged that the development of an educated society is conducive to eco- nomic prosperity. For this reason, Western societies empha- sise the need for the promotion of university education as a part of this development and universities now play a key role in the economic prosperity of individuals and societies as a whole. The future and economic growth of nations and soci- eties are created within their walls. This new role for the uni- versities has brought with it an increased demand that they should serve all members of society as well as promoting their services in more widely dispersed communities. Univer- sities have responded to this demand by opening branches in other countries or by using technology to offer some or all of their courses via distance learning. This article is concerned with the development of dis- tance learning, both in this country and abroad and aims to answer the question as to whether the growth of university education in the form distance learning has resulted in an increase in university-qualified individuals or jobs in rural areas. In this connection, the article particularly considers university-qualified women as they make use of distance learning options in greater numbers than men.
