Notes on Some
Linguistic Features in AM 291 4to
(Jómsvíkiriga saga)*
THE version of Jómsvíkinga saga in AM 291 4to1 falls into two
main parts, the division being marked by the introductory words
to part II: Nv hefzk vpp aNaR þáttr savgvNar — (36-11, after which
follows the history proper of the Jómsvikings. In the preceding part I
there is an account of early Danish history, comprising three major
episodes and a fourth minor one:
I(a) 1—1510 The story of Knútr inn fundni and a brief genealo-
gical section ending with the birth of Gormr inn gamli; Gorm’s
marriage to Þyri; his relations with Klakk-Haraldr, her father; death
of Knútr Gormsson, attacked by his brother Haraldr; Gorm’s death
on receipt of this news.
I(b) 1512—2212 The death of Haraldr gráfeldr of Norway at the
hands of Gull-Haraldr, son of Knútr Gormsson, as a result of Hákon
jarl’s intrigues; Gull-Harald’s own defeat and death at the hands of
Hákon; Norway under Hákon’s rule, trihutary to Haraldr Gormsson;
death of Gunnhildr konungamóðir.
I(c) 2212-—3513 Emperor Otto’s attack on Denmark and the part
played by ÓIi (Óláfr Tryggvason) in overcoming the Danavirki; the
conversion of King Haraldr and of Hákon; the latter’s return to
Norway, his apostasy and revolt against Harald’s overlordship.
