to the scribe of 291, but there is nothing to show that any of the
major interpolations are to be attributed to him. The manuscript is
dated towards 1300,s but it has numerous linguistic and scribal
characteristics that are distinctively archaic. It is only necessary to
mention such features as relative es, -s (two instances in prose);
enclitic repetition of first person pronoun ek;° frequent occurrence
of preposition of and, of greater significance, of prep. and adv.
umb;7 the constant use of Latin abbreviations, sed, vel, post, for
heldr, eSa, eptir, occasionally ipse for sjálfr, and once domina for
dróttning;8 in the orthography may also be noted the almost
invariable use of þ in all positions and the frequent use of rj for ng
(sometimes for gn) ;9 Lindblad has also concluded that the way in
which the accent-mark is used in 291 suggests an archaic original.10
Such features in combination are not to be expected from a scribe in
the latter part of the thirteenth century and must indicate an archaic
exemplar, one probably written in a generation that at least to some
extent shared the linguistic and scribal habits of the original Jvs.
