arrived at Jersey City early and went
over on the Ferry.
July 13:—Monday morning to New
York City. Took a “hackman,” paid
him $2.00 (he tried to cheat me and
wanted $3.00, but not having the fare I
threatened him with a policeman and
at last that policeman, which every Ice-
lander has at the end of his right arm).
Went to the Eastern Hotel near Castle
Garden and took a room (No. 62) for
which I pay 75c a day. Do not board
there as it is too dear ($2.00 per day)
for me. Went to Niles office and saw
Mr. N. Niles who told me that Mr. M.
Niles was expected home Saturday
evening, or perhaps not before Monday.
I wrote to Mr. Marston Niles this day
and the next 2 days,
July 14th and 15th:—I went in search
of the Norwegian Line but nowhere to
be found. I moved Wednesday after-
noon the 15th to 14 Allen St. where I
lodged until I left New York.
July 16th:—I found the Norwegian
Line, got information that Harald Haar-
fager was expected next week.
July 17th:—Read in Dall’s Book and
the Newspapers.
July 18th and 19th:—Walked about
on Bowling Green and Central Park,
etc.
July 20th, Monday:—I saw Marston
Niles and with him Prof. H. H. Boye-
sen.* Prof. Boyesen left us, but I
talked with Mr. Niles until after 2
o’clock when we went to Restaurazione
Italiana and took dinner. Then Mr.
Niles took me with him to the Editor
of the “Sun” and to the Editor of the
“Journal for Army and Navy” and at
last to the Editor of the “Galaxy” where
we found Prof. Boyesen again. After
that I left Mr. Niles for the day.
July 21st:—I wrote to Prof. Fiske and
to Rev. J. Bjarnason in Milwaukee, etc.
Began to write about Alaska.

July 22nd, Wednesday:—I saw Mr.
Niles again and we spent several hours
together talking about Iceland and the
Alaska project. Wrote more about
Alaska. Prof. Boyesen paid me a visit.
July 23rd:—In the afternoon I read
in the newspapers that Harald Haarfager
had landed the day before with some
emigrants. I went to Castle Garden in
search of them but too late. The gates
were closed. I went to the office of the
Norwegian Line, the same was closed—
to Rev. Robt. Neumann—closed. Went
home and to bed.
July 24th:—I went to the office of the
Norwegian Line, heard about St. Olaf.
Heard about the broken contract, went
tc Niles. (Thursday night heard about
the Contract, Friday morning told Niles
about that.)
July 25th:—Niles lent me $5.00 and I
was about to start but got too late.
July 26th, Sunday:—In the afternoon
left New York, and
July 27th:—Monday morning came to
Ithaca early. Stayed there with Mr.
Fiske the 28th.
July 29th:—Until 4 o’clock p.m. the
SOth.
(N.B.—Monday visited the Library,
Wednesday we took a ride about the
City and vicinity, Thursday at home in
rain.)
July 30th:—Came to Elmira and had
to wait for the train as it was late
(broken dawn).
July 31st:—In the night came to Buf-
falo and slept there over the night. In
the morning to Clifton, waited there
2% hours. Visited Niagara Falls. Came
to Detroit in the night.
August lst:—In the morning arrived
at Grd. Haven and had to wait there till
evening for the Steamer.
August 2nd (Sunday):—Reached Mil-
waukee, 6V2 a.m., and celebrated the
1,000 years Jubilate in the afternoon.*
August 30th (Sunday);—Left Milwau-
