22 Tímarit Þjóðrœhnisfélags Islendinga kee at 1 o’clock p.m. and went to Chi- cago where we left the same evening with the L.S. and M.S. Came to New York. Sept. 2nd (Wednesday):—7 o’clock in the morning, left there 6.30 in the after- noon. Arrived in Chicago Friday morn- ing. Sept. 4th:—Stayed there until 10 p.m. Arrived to Omaha Saturday night. Sept. 5th:—And stayed there over the night. Left Omaha on Sunday morning. Sept. 6th:— Sept. 8th (Tuesday evening):—Ar- rived at Ogden and left the same even- ing. Sept. lOth (Thursday evening):—Ar- rived in San Francisco and went to Western Hotel. Sept. llth (Friday):—In the morning at 9 o’clock we went to the U.S. Pay- master Spalding (Office 434 California St.) and from there around in the City for buying our supplies. At 3 o’clock p.m. we went on board a Steamer that brought us to Maine Island, where a small Steamer took us to the “Ports- mouth”. Sept. 12th (Saturday):—We remained on Board and Sept. 13th (Sunday):—We were occu- pied in writing letters. I wrote to Niles, Fiske and a correspondence to “Vilc- verji”. (Evening with Adm(iral). Sept. 14th (Monday):—Morning. We started at 6 o’clock. Was writing to Kristr(un) and G.M. and finishing “Vik- verji” and wrote to Prof. Anderson. In the evening anchored near San Francisco. Sept. 15th (Tuesday):—Started again in the morning. The Steamer left us in the afternoon. Spoke with the pilot. Sept. 16th (Wednesday): — No wind, no progress. A pilot came on Board. I wrote to Rev. J. Bjarnason. Sept. 17th (Thursday):—About noon we got wind from N.W. and sailed S.W. but after a while the wind turned a little and we could not hold Course to North. Sept. 18th (Friday):—Good wind, Course between W.N.W. and N.W. In the afternoon Course between W.N.W. snd N.W. Sept. 19th (Saturday):—Still, and no wind all day. We are about 150 miles from San Francisco. Sept. 20th (Sunday):—We got a good wind from N.W. and sailed W. 2’ to S. Sept. 21st (Monday):—Sailed N.W. in the forenoon then it became quite still again. Sept. 22nd (Tuesday):—No wind. Quite still. Sept. 23rd (Wednesday):—Yet still. In the evening a little wind. Sept. 24th (Thursday):—Wind (light), we sailed West (2° North). In the even- ing the wind increasing--- Sept. 25th (Friday):—Wind from N.W. Sept. 26th (Saturday):—Still in the morning. At 12 o’clock noon we were 400 miles west and 80 miles North of San Francisco. At noon we got a fresh South Wind and sailed N.W. (2° West): this wind increased in the Even'ing. (914 knots an hour) and continued dur- ing the night and the next day. Sept. 27th (Sunday):—In the after- noon it became still. Sept. 28th (Monday):—Wind from N.W. We sailed W.S.W. Rather strong wind---- Sept. 29th (Tuesday):—Same. About noon the wind turned S.W. and we sailed N.W. Rain in the evening. Sept. 30th (Wednesday): — Rather heavy rain in the morning. Wind the same. The wind blows from the West, we sail N.N.W. In the afternoon no rain. In the evening we again sail N.W. October lst (Thursday):—Good wind yet, we go N.W. (1° West)--At noon we were on Latitude 47° 15' and Longi- tude 138° 13' West of Greenwich. We sailed N.N.W. About 4 o’clock p.m. the wind ceased and it became nearly still. October 2nd (Friday):—Almost still most of the day. At noon we had Lati- tude 49° 27'. At about 5 o’clock in the
