Hún lauk prófi í frítímafræði frá Gautaborg árið 1989 og meistaragráðu í uppeldis- og menntunarfræði frá Kennarahá- skóla Íslands árið 2003. Hún stundar nú doktorsnám við félagsráðgjafadeild Háskóla Íslands. Helstu fræðilegu áhugamál og rannsóknarsvið hennar eru einelti, tómstunda- og félagsmálafræði, getuskipting í íþróttum barna, hreyfing og heilsa og tengsl barna við náttúruna.
