Archaeologia Islandica - 01.01.1998, Side 11
Editorial um sögu fornleifaskráningar á íslandi og hugleiðing um rannsóknargildi fornleifaskráningar, en stærsti hluti ritsins að þessu sinni er lagður undir rannsóknir á fornbýli á Hofstöðum og er hér gerð grein fyrir niðurstöðum undirbúningsrannsókna 1991—1995 og greint frá ýmsum nýjum aðferðum sem beitt hefur verið við rannsóknirnar síðan 1996. Þá eru ritdómar um ný- legar bækur á sviði íslenskrar forn- leifafræði og skýrsla um starf Forn- leifastofnunar frá upphafi, en í næstu heftum verður auk greinargerðar um starfsemi stofnunarinnar á hverju ári gefið yfirlit um aðrar fornleifarann- sóknir á Islandi. Skýrslur um Hof- staðarannsóknir eru sérstaklega gott dæmi um samstarf íslenskra og er- lendra vísindamanna og hefur af þeim sökum mestur hluti ritsins verið helg- aður þeim. I framtíðinni verður svip- aður háttur hafður á, heil hefti verða helguð einstökum rannsóknarverk- efnum en einnig verða gefin út hefti með blandaðra efni, styttri greinum um minni rannsóknir og athugunar- efni. Tímaritið Archaeologia Islandica mun breiða út rannsóknarniðurstöður og hvetja til umræðu á sviði íslenskrar fornleifafræði í því markmiði að auðga hana og efla. This is the first issue of Archaeologia Islandica, a journal established by Fornleifastofnun íslands (Institute of Archaeology) with the aim of publis- hing research reports, articles and reviews on Icelandic archaeology and related material. It emerges out of a long tradition of publishing which began in 1880 with the first edition of Árbók Hins íslenzka fornleifafélags (Yearbook of the Icelandic Archaeolog- ical Society) which regularly reported the archaeological work done by a small group of people in an antiquar- ian tradition. While Árbók continues today as a major Icelandic scientific journal, it presents material covering a wide range of historical interest to a wide audience and with the increasing amount of archaeological work being done in Iceland, especially larger proj- ects, the lack of a journal dedicated specifically to archaeology is being felt. Many of these larger projects have been published abroad under a foreign press, whether conducted by foreigners (e.g. Else Nordahl’s excavations in Reykjavík) or not (e.g. Margrét Her- manns-Auðardóttir’s investigations in Herjólfsdalur or Guðrún Sveinbjarnar- dóttir’s study of farm abandonment). Since the pace and quantity of such projects is only increasing, the pro- blem is only becoming more acute, especially as the number of archaeol- ogists, both foreign and national, working in the country has been ris- ing. In the last few years, the three main archaeological organizations in Iceland - the National Museum (Þjóð- minjasafn), Árbær Museum (Árbæjar- safn) and the Institute (Fornleifa- stofnun) — have been conducting work and producing reports at an ever expanding rate but the dissemination 11
