Kendra Willson ingar Ringlers virðist hann hins vegar dæma stefnu Ringlers í stað þess að meta hversu vel Ringler framkvæmir það verkefni sem hann hefur sett sjálfum sér (sbr. Silju Aðalsteinsdóttur 2007:16). Bók Ringlers hefur fræðilegan umbúnað og inniheldur vissulega mik- inn fróðleik. Fræðimönnum kann að finnast þeir sviknir þegar í Ijós kemur að þýðingar Ringlers eru frekar listrænar en fræðilegar. Amory gefur þetta í skyn þegar hann fjallar um gildi bókarinnar annars vegar fyrir lesendur sem kunna og sem ekki kunna íslensku (2004:100). Þeir sem munu hafa áhuga á skýringunum eru þeir sem eru að reyna að skilja ljóðin á frummál- inu, meðan þeir sem ekkert kunna í íslensku muni skemmta sér við lestur þýðinganna, en munu læra jafn mikið um Ringler og um Jónas: The enormous amounts of work that Dick Ringler put into his book of translations will most certainly be appreciated (as by me) by those readers who are seeking the contexts and sources of Jónas Hallgrímsson’s poems, and some assistance from Ringler’s translations. Necessarily those readers will already understand Icelandic and have some knowledge of Icelandic poetry as a whole (admittedly a huge corpus). Readers who do not know lcelandic and know nothing of Iceland’s poetry will often be pleased (as I have been) by the beauty and deftness of Ringler’s versification, but they should reaiize that the beguiling literary charms of his translations have often been devised (as I have said before) at the expense of the meanings of the original texts. For the formal devices of Icelandic poetry have often been given precedent over the sense of Jónas’s poems. Hence beginners will have to develop by separate study some knowledge of Icelandic before they can say to themselves that they have really been in touch with his poetic work through Ringler’s translations. It is a tiresome old song, but here, alas!, as in so many wretched translations circulating today, one must be able to consult the originals in their languages if one wants to know for certain what the foreign poet in question was saying (Amory 2004: 100). „Beguiling literary charms“ koma því ekki í veg fyrir það þetta séu „wretc- hed translations“. Kannski hefði Ringler hlotið betri dóma ef hann hefði birt þýðing- arnar einar sér en sett skýringarnar í útgáfu af ljóðum Jónasar á frum- málinu - aftengt fræðimanninn Ringler frá skáldinu Ringler. Hann segist reyndar hafa viljað hafa bæði íslenska texta ljóðanna og þýðingarnar með í bókinni — eins og á vefsíðunni - en að það hafi ekki verið hægt plássins 80 á — Tímarit um þýðingar nr. 12 / 2008
