stutta formlega skólagöngu að baki. Starfsfólk símenntunar-
miðstöðva um allt land vinnur hörðum höndum að því að
koma upplýsingum um fræðslu á framfæri og aðstoða fólk
við að finna fræðslu við hæfi en það er oft þrautin þyngri.
Lágt sjálfsmat og sjálfstraust er að mati viðmælanda minna
áberandi ástæða fyrir fjarveru frá fræðslu. Ástæða lágs
sjálfsmats og sjálfstrausts getur verið af ýmsum toga, það
sem kom skýrast fram í viðtölunum var slæm reynsla af fyrri
skólagöngu og námsörðugleikar.
Það er því mikil vinna fólgin í því að ná til hluta markhóps
símenntunarmiðstöðvanna og ferlið við að ná þátttakendum
inn í fræðslu getur tekið langan tíma þar sem það er ekki
fljótunnið verk að hjálpa fólki að breyta viðhorfum til sjálfs
sín. Starfsfólk símenntunarmiðstöðvanna vinnur mikið starf
til að skapa traust og umgjörð um fræðslu fyrir fullorðna sem
veitir þeim einstaklingum sem til þeirra sækja öryggi til að
þróast og þroskast. Árangurinn er ekki aðeins metinn í því
hversu margir sækja fræðslu heldur einnig í þeirri breytingu
sem fólk upplifir á sjálfu sér í gegnum fræðsluna því eins og
einn viðmælandi sagði: „Ég held samt að rauði þráðurinn í
þessu öllu sé sjálfstraustið, það ber alltaf að sama brunni.“

Halla Valgeirsdóttir starfar sem sérfræðingur hjá Fræðslu-
miðstöð atvinnulífsins. Helstu verkefni hennar tengjast
námsskrárskrifum. Hún var áður fræðslustjóri hjá Leikskólum
Reykjavíkur. Hún er að ljúka M.Ed. prófi í menntunarfræði
með áherslu á fræðslustarf með fullorðnum frá Háskóla
Íslands og er með BA. próf í félagsfræði frá sama skóla.
A b S T R A c T
Low self-esteem or self-confidence is one of the reasons given
for the absence of adults form education. The paper takes a
closer look at this reason in view of the findings from research
based on interviews with the personnel of lifelong learning
centres in Iceland where the subject was the participation of
adults with short formal education. The research was part of
the author’s Master’s project for M. Ed. degree in education
studies at the School of Education at the University of Iceland
and is based on the methodology of qualitative research.
Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a focus group
of twenty-two staff members of eight lifelong learning centres.
Six interviews took place at the centre where the interlocutor
worked. One interview with representatives from two centres
took place in a public place. Through their interaction with the
individuals in their target groups, the personnel of these edu-
cation centres have extensive knowledge of the conditions of
those who have the shortest education and are least likely to
accept education offers. Their experience and knowledge can
add a new point of view that has not been applied in studies
of the participation in and absence from education.
The objective of this paper is to demonstrate how the staff
of Icelandic lifelong learning centres experiences the low self-
esteem and self-confidence of people in the target group of the
centres and how this is revealed when it comes to participation
in the adult education programmes of the centres. First there is
a short introduction on low self-esteem and self-confidence of
adults generally in education. Then there is a discussion of low
self-esteem and self-confidence based on the interviews with
the personnel of the lifelong learning centres where various
elements of the work of the centres are linked to the subject. It
is worth noting that the features of the operation of the centres
that are discussed in the paper are far from being exhaustive.
The elements covered here are only those conducive to the sub-
ject discussed in the paper and appeared in the interviews. In
the paper it is the staff of the lifelong learning centres that have
their say; their words appear without lengthy explanation or
categorisation. In discussing the experience and opinions of the
staff, there is no mention of their occupation within the centres
or where those centres are located.
