the new edifice. This corner gives a fixed point for correlating the foundations
of the last three cathedrals. Two other points for corroboration are known: the
grave shown as a black oblong north of the choir and the double grave shown
as a white square on the point of the jointing of nave and steeple. In the first
grave remains of the foundations of the wall were found. In the second grave
were found cornerstones of hewn red sandstone. On the drawing the thickness of
the eastwall and partially of the southwall has been shown as the measurements
of the two older cathdrals are taken on the inside.
In the surviving stone cathedral a stone altar is placed against the east wall.
Although its measurements agree with a mediaeval antependium from Hólar, now
in the Þjóðminjasafn in Reykjavík, and the mediaeval altar piece, which still
survives at Hólar, it seems very doubtful that it is the old altar from about 1320,
removed from its original site.
