stream of water, the level for carrying which to the bath is not ill-
constructed. — This bath of Reykholt was constructed by the cele-
brated Snorro Sturleson, nearly 600 years ago. — At the present time
it appears to be little used.“ 10)
Lauslega þýtt: „Við héldum til þessa staðar í því skyni að skoða
forna laug, sem byggð hefur verið til viðtöku á heitu vatni úr hver,
sem er þar í nánd. Laugin er mjög einföld að gerð — kringlótt ker,
12 eða 14 fet í þvermál, og 3 eða 4 fet á dýpt — renna er til að veita
heita vatninu úr hvernum að henni — og önnur til að hleypa því
úr — Mældist okkur vatnið vera 112°, þegar það rennur í laugina,
en að jafnaði um 100° í lauginni — Hverinn er 100 stikur í burtu.
Streymir frá honum töluverður lækur, rásin, sem gerð er til að veita
honum í laugina, er sæmilega hlaðin. — Þessa laug í Reykholti byggði
hinn víðfrægi Snorro Sturleson fyrir næstum 600 árum. Nú á dögum
virðist hún lítið notuð.“
8) Ebenezer Henderson segir í ferðabók sinni frá dvöl í Reykholti
sumarið 1815, mun hann hafa komið í Reykholt 25. júní: „Reykhollt
is at present occupied by Sira Eggert Jonson, the Dean of Borgar-
fiord Syssel. He was also absent on our arrival, but we were made
welcome by the female part of the family, and on the arrival of my
baggage, I had my tent pitched on the summit of the virki, a circular
mound of earth, forming the most eminent remains of the fortifica-
tion, which, in former times, surrounded the farm. On his removing
to this place, Snorro Sturluson not only repaired and enlarged the
buildings, but inclosed the whole with a high and strong wall as a
defence against the attacks of his enemies: for in spite of the excel-
lent regulations which existed during the Icelandic republic for se-
curing individual safety, the intestine broils of the different chief-
tains, in which Snorro, in his time, had an eminent share, exposed the
leading men to the rage and wantonness of the contending parties.
The extent of the wall may yet be traced, but it is no where so con-
spicuous as here, where a watch-tower seems to have stood, and
through which a subterraneous passage has communicated with the
Snorra-laug, or “Snorro’s Bath”, situated directly at its base.
