Sturlunga research, Kálund by extensive and thorough publication of
Sturlunga‘s texts (Copenhagen 1906-11) and Ólsen by dividing the whole
compilation into sagas, dating them and suggesting their authors.
Gradually historians have recognized that Sturlunga is not as reliable a
source of the history of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries as was earlier
believed. But Sturlunga has still hardly been appreciated as a piece of
literature, nor has it been the subject of comprehensive literary criticism.
Little by little scholars have, however, pointed to evidence of specific
authorship in Sturlunga and literary borrowings. They have also discussed
certain compositional features in some of the sagas and evidence of unifying
themes and ethical and moralistic notions in the compilation. Arguments
have also been made for standard plot patterning and feud presentation in
Sturlunga. All of this adds up to a strong case that Sturlunga has a literary
shape, as has been argued by this writer. This is of key importance, for it
bears directly on the question of historicity. Without analysis of Sturlunga's
poetics, its documentary value cannot be gauged. Further, the recognition of
Sturlunga‘s literary nature would in itself contribute to an understanding of
the contemporary life and culture of the time of its composition.
