in Eyrbyggja saga in the feud that arises over the mare-riding to which Gunnlaugr
is subjected. Similarly Þórólfrs sale of some of the appropriated land to two
freedmen winds the mechanism for future contention. Thus we have in the
younger Geirríðr both a trace of the hostel-owner and the ‘fairy wife’ or uncanny
woman of Irish Otherworld tales. More speculatively, one might even say that
the revenants who figure in the Fróðá Marvels later in the saga, when Celtic-Norse
Þórgunna’s bedclothes are incorrectly disposed of, invert the hostel motifs of
hospitality or of live heroes returning from the Otherworld so that the farmhouse
becomes an unwelcoming nightly gathering place for draugar when its threshold
is brought squarely athwart the now reversed road from life to death.
