Eysteinn Þorvaldsson ar voru: Sigurður Júl Jóhannesson („Land of Dreams“ eftir Jón Trausta, „The Tear“eftir Kristján Jónsson), Bjarni Þorsteinsson („Northern Lights“ eftir Einar Benediktsson (sem Páll Bjarnason þýddi einnig), Guðrún Tómasdóttir (Arnrún frá felli) og Gísli Jónsson. Einnig birtust þýðingar eftir Magnús Á. Árnason sem dvaldist í tólf ár í Bandaríkjunum (1918- 1930), t.d. „Sorrow“ eftir Jóhann Sigurjónsson og „O Beauteous World“ eftirTómas Guðmundsson. Eins og að líkum lætur hafa fleiri þýðendur en einn spreytt sig á því að þýða vinsælustu kvæðin. Til skemmtunar og fróðleiks skulu hér sýndar þýðingar fjögurra Vestur-Islendinga á fyrsta erindi kvæðisins „Langförull“ (Þó þú langförull legðir) eftir Stefán G. Einungis Páll hefur ljóðstafi í þýð- ingunni:19 Eggert Jóhannsson: Skáli Johnson: Proud, Globe-circling traveller, Wander far as you will Your own dear homeland features, Will cling to you still. And the domes of this dreamland In the distance will rise, With the crags and the cascades And with coronets of ice. Though all lands in long travels You should lay ’neath your feet - In your mind and your heart yet Your old homeland’s marks meet! You volcano and ice-sea Fall and geyser-fount bore! Bred nicht scree-height and ling-heath! Fleir to skerry and shore! Páll Bjarnason: Kristjana Gunnars: To the uttermost outlands Of the earth you may roam, In the mind every moment Are the mem’ries of home, Friend of glacier and glenside, Kin of geyser and mount, Nice of long-ness and lingh-heath, Son of land-ice and fount. Though you wide journeying place every country underfoot, your mind and heart bear your homeland’s resemblance, kinswoman of volcano and Polar sea! relation of waterfall and hot spring! daughter of scree slope and heather moor! son of fishing post and skerry! 19 Fleiri þýddu þetta kvæði á ensku, m.a. Lee Hollander prófessor við Wisconsin- háskóla, Runólfur Feldsted og Walter J. Lindal og Watson Kirkconnell þýddi fýrsta erindi kvaeðisins. 60 á JíSœý'úá — Tímarit um þýðingar nr. 12 / 2008
