lvlO, Clerkwrerm 2r6, erfida 2r23, hågguaranwm 2r31, merker 2v7,
traustanra 2vl8, storar 2y23).
Old Icelandic 9 and 0 are represented by 6 in ca. three-fourths
of their occurrences (ollum lvl lb, onnguan lr22), otherwise by au
(saunng lv30) and, in one instance, by o (ollum lrl3). Before g,
e is twice written ei as in seigawde 2r29, sleigen« 2v3, but cf.
segiamde 2r6, lvl,7,16, slegenw 2vl0, etc. The verb mega, which is
often written with ei during the 16th century (influenced to some
extent by eiga) appears here with e: megu lrl4, megi lvl6. The
palatal glide in long é is indicated by sier 2rl0, 2vl5, and pier lrlO,
2r5 (but cf. mer lv7, 2vl9). There is one example of e representing
ei: leddu lrl7. Both a and å are usually represented by a, although
å is written in several instances as sa (skaalurø lv6, but skalena lv9).
The most usual forms of the unstressed vowels are e (ecke lv29)
and u (urdu lv7), but examples of unstressed i (ecki lvl) are quite
common. There are only two examples of unstressed o (uoro lrl8,
pionust0 2v25). The expansion of uissulga 2rl3, 2v2 and kostulga,
kostulgt 2v6 is made arbitrary due to occurrences of skhumlegt
2v6 and elskuleg lr29 as well as kostuliga 2r8, ymesligt 2r7, herfeliga
2vl0. Contracted forms of mikill have y instead of i in the root
syllable (mykla 2v22, but mikii lr8, etc.) as does the word myskim-
lr4, myskunw- lr3b-5.
Superscript vowels may represent the vowel alone in word-final
position: hafa lr5 (hafa lrl), su° lvl (suo lvl6), but they are not
abbreviations and will not be marked by italics in this edition.
The superscript signs abbreviating vowels in conjunction with a
consonant may represent only the vowel or the consonant should
an unetymological geminate arise: hdgguaranwm 2r31 (with the
sign for ar = a, not ra as in drøf 2rl0, cf. also hogguarenn 2r32);
storar (with the sign for or) 2v23 (stora lv33); huer (fem!) 2r9
and poler (both with the sign for er) lvl9 (pylder lvl7); dmf
(with the sign for ra, not ar) 2rl0 (fra lvl7), and nockud 2r3 (with
the sign for ud as in nåckud 2rl3).
Forms such as fer lvl9, 2r32 and huer (mase.) Ir5, 11 indicate
that the scribe no longer wrote word-final geminate r, thus ber
2r9, 2v26 and fer 2r9 are also expanded according to the above rule.
The svarabhakti vowel is only expressed by using the superscript
