paper are used in the binding to give protection; there are references
to a Mr. Jon Vigfuson, a quantity of platt fisk, and a quantity of
blandet fisk, and two occurrences of the date 1822.
The next owner of the manuscript can be identified from the
note at the foot of the title-page: BBenedicti possessor. This is
most probably Bogi Benediktsson, 1771-1849, the compiler of the
work later published as Syslumannaæfir. He might perhaps have
had the 1760 title-page copied if the manuscript was re-bound
while in his possession.
A likely descent for the manuscript from Bogi Benediktsson
to the known owners in most recent times is suggested in the
Catalogue.
Hrolfs saga kraka is item 29 in the manuscript, on pp. 999-
1036; the verso p. 1036 is blank, and the next saga begins on the
following recto as is the practice throughout the manuscript.
The title is: Saga af Hrolfe Kongi Kraka, and the saga is divided
into twenty-five chapters. There is an extra chapter at 441, but
no chapter at 507, 55«, 688, 8615, 9023, 954, 10113, lll11, 1161 and
1231. Except for the last, this is the same chapter division as in
Adv (Bibi. Arnam. XXIV, pp. 38-50).
The text of the saga in L633 is very similar to that in Adv.
In Bibi. Arnam. there is a long list of variants peculiar to Adv
among the primary manuscripts. The great majority of these,
about 340 of them, also occur in L633, either in precisely the same
form or with only trifling variations, and in about 20 more places
the two manuscripts have partial agreement on a variant. Yet
there remain in the list places in which Adv has a variant while
L633 retains the reading of 286 and other primary manuscripts:
420, 55, li14, 125, 14«, 3811, 5616~17, 625, 7021, 936, 11819, 1182«-1
and 12211-12. To these could be added a few more in which Adv
has a variant and L633 has retained at least a part of the original
reading, e.g. 6115-16 where L633 retains the words Peir-peim
which Adv omits, but afterwards has the variant recorded for Adv
for the words og-vera. These variants are enough to show that
L633 is not derived from Adv; and that the reverse is not the case
either is shown by the variants peculiar to L633 given below.
The two manuscripts must be derived from a lost common original.
