Hjålmarsson’s exemplar3.
The text of Hrolfs saga kraka in L2796 is derived ultimately
from 12c. In Bibi. Arnam. XXIV, pp. 108-109, there are examples
of variants characteristic of 12c, and except for four very small
changes these all recur in exactly the same form in L2796. It is
true of the rest of the text too, that there is no passage in which
12c diverges in a significant way from its source where L2796
has the more original reading.
Since 12c may have been part of a larger manuscript which had
passed into Årni Magnusson’s possession by 1716, it is possible
that Markus Horlåksson copied a now lost copy of 12c rather than
12c itself.
In the course of transmission of the text from 12c to L2796,
through possibly two intermediate lost copies, some changes have
oecurred in it. The following headings have been introduced:
Froda Pdttr l2, Pdttr af Helga og Hroar 164, Svipdags Peattr 365,
Peattr af Bådvari Biarlca 5119 and Skulldar Pættr 828. Many minor
variants have been introduced in the wording of the text, but
only a few that are noteworthy, e.g.

IV. The Variants in L2796.
Some time after he had written the text of Hrolfs saga kraka
in L2796, Halldor Hjålmarsson was able to add variants to it in
the margins, marking them with the letter A. In the note which
