but six of these seven oecurrences are in the double consonant (the excep-
tion is moigum, lr8). In AM 508, 2 appears only in ættstoir, lrl8, (cf. Mod.
129rb22).
By contrast, Årni reproduces Modruvallabok'& use of R with great ac-
curacy in AM 505 and AM 508. Modruvallabok employs R 14 times in the
portion of Kormdks saga covered by Årni’s copy (excluding the name
Hanalldr at the beginning of the saga, mentioned above), and Årni has
reproduced all of them, besides adding one in kvamuR (7vl), which may
be a misreading of kvamur in Mod. 121vbll. In the part of Viga-Glums saga
covered by Arni’s part of AM 508, Modruvallabdk uses R 45 times, and again
Årni has reproduced all these cases, besides adding one (peina, 5v2) which
is not in Mod. 130ra8—but this is probably influenced by the immediately
preceding huan.
It is therefore probable that Årni’s use of n follows Vatnshyrna fairly
accurately. In his copies, n (sometimes with a dot above it) is usual in its
old geminating sense (e.g. annahar, H6r3, spyn, E40:4, leynidyk, C2v25),
though E also shows a few rr spellings, e.g. fyrra, E43:7. But it should
perhaps be mentioned that G is used in the same way, e.g. piGia, H5vl8.
In C, n does not appear elsewhere; in H it also occurs 7 times in the ab-
breviation r* for riki (e.g. H8v5), but not elsewhere; in E, it appears twice
in the word hross (noss, E33:13, nossatokuna, E35:7), but not elsewhere.
4.8. o/k, chiefly in medial and final positions.
k is usual in both medial and final positions in all Arni’s copies of Vatns-
hyrna, but interlinear final c, always in mc (mic), appears 4 times in E
(all in verses. e.g. E42:4), once in C (3rl0, at a line-ending) and 4 times
in H (e.g. 8vl 1). Other pronouns appear only with k (except eg for ek, H4vl6,
and sagdag, in a verse, H9v24).
Initial c appears only in crosmarkit, Clr8, which is probably due to the
influence of Latin writing on words of ecclesiastical origin (for example,
initial c in capitulum is normal in many Mss., including Modruvallabok,
which otherwise use only initial k).
The word ok is usually abbreviated, but 7 ok and 16 oc spellings occur;
however, oc was Arni’s habitual graph when he was copying from medieval
Mss., and it is doubtful whether he reflects Vatnshyrna accurately in this
respect. In this case, comparison of AM 505 and AM 508 with Modruvallabok
does not produce any clear result. Modruvallabok usually uses the abbrevia-
tion, but has occasional ok. In AM 508, Årni begins by expanding the
abbreviation as oc, but after the first two cases of ok, at Mod. 121vbl8 and 23
(AM 505 7vl4 and 8r5), he changes over to ok, and thereafter has only
one case of oc (at 10v21, where Mod. has the abbreviation). In AM 508,
Årni is less systematic—in the portion of Viga-Glums saga copied by him,
Mod. uses ok 12 times, and of these 10 appear as ok in AM 508 and 2 as oc.
Mod. uses the abbreviation 80 times, of which 53 appear as ok in AM 508
and 27 as oc.
With a Capital letter, Ok appears twice in the copies of Vatnshyrna
